WOD 2012.12.20 - Good soil

Good soil

In the opening of Mark 4, Jesus tells the parable of the sower to a large crowd. In his explanation to his disciples later, Jesus explains:

The sower sows the word. And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”
--Mark 4:14-20

I want to be good soil. Where I hear the word, accept it, and bear much fruit. Too often, I find myself similar to rocky ground with thorns! Wavering, lacking steadfastness and easily distracted by this world.

As I reflect back on the workout, I think back to the parable of the sower. From that story, I am reminded I need an unshakable foundation and a laser-sharp focus.

Unshakable foundation: This involves understanding the "why". What drives me? Why push hard? Why keep pressing forward? Why endure? Why work with diligence and excellence?
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. --Philippians 3:14
Laser-sharp focus: This focus is a clarity of vision. Your pursuit. Dreams. Goals. Aspirations. These need to be crystal clear, untainted by any distractions, refined through discipline.
But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. --1 Corinthians 9:27

As a random aside, last night, I had a Christmas party in downtown Toronto and was thinking about where to park after work. Then I stumbled across this awesome site! You can find the nearest free and paid parking spots in Toronto! How cool is that!
