Passages from this morning

This morning, Carmelina came over for devotions and coffee. Here are two passages that stood out to us during our time in God's Word.

Justice is turned back,
    and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
    and uprightness cannot enter.
Truth is lacking,
    and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

The Lord saw it, and it displeased him
    that there was no justice.
He saw that there was no man,
    and wondered that there was no one to intercede;
then his own arm brought him salvation,
    and his righteousness upheld him.
--Isaiah 59:14-16

Check out this video on intercession. This video references this passage in Isaiah and unpacks the importance of intercessory prayer.

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest."
--John 4:34-35

James MacDonald referred to John 4 (Samaritan woman) in his talk on fasting as part of his series, Developing the Disciplines of Authentic Faith. There are two parallel stories going on. One is with the woman at the well who discovers that God looks at the heart and that Jesus is the Messiah.

The other story is about the disciples, who are went to the town to get some food while Jesus was doing the will of His Father. For Jesus, that is his food. Too often, I'm preoccupied with my immediate hunger and what I want ... now. My wants, my desires, my cravings. This is a refreshing passage that reminds us of what truly satisfies and the urgency of the gospel message.
